Greetings Everyone! Last month we had our silent auction at Paul and Olivine Virtue’s home and it was a great success. I would like to thank the Virtues for their hospitality and also thank the following members for their gracious plant donations for this auction: John Martin, Nick Plummer, Charles Walker, Suzanne Hens, Leo Sagasti, Josh and Robin Gurlitz and myself. This month our guest speaker Roy Tokunaga comes from Hawaii to share his extensive experience in orchid growing. The gorgeous plants they grow at his nursery, H&R Orchids, speak for themselves. The Triad Orchid show is...

Greetings Everyone! This month our speaker Keith Davis will talk about the elusive Ghost Orchid! I am sure some of us have failed in trying to grow this tricky but stunningly beautiful orchid, including myself. So this is a chance to know the tricks to grow it correctly and ask questions. Later in the month we have an exciting silent auction with a potluck, where you can bid on outstanding specimen orchids that we can’t easily find available for sale. If you feel like your plants are growing in slow-motion, come join us and bring home some instant-gratification orchids! We are starting to...

Greetings Everyone! In the beginning of this month we had our Growers Day 2012 at the Raulston Arboretum. The event was a lot of fun with very informative lectures, great food and beautiful plants. Many thanks to all volunteers who helped making this a success. In our meeting this month we will have Courtney Hackney as the speaker, who will describe the species behind modern Cattleya hybrids. This is a great opportunity to learn about how many of our favorite hybrids were developed. Best Regards and Happy Growing! Armando Neves TOS President 2012

Greetings Everyone! If your vandas, like mine, tend to loose the bottom leaves and turn into a mini palm tree over time, here is a chance to improve on this. This month we have Michael Coronado from R.F. Orchids giving us a talk about Vanda Culture. I have been to R.F. Orchids several times and I must say they have the most beautiful Vandas so this should be a very informative talk. Growers Day 2012 has been confirmed for August 4th at the JC Raulston Arboretum. This is a very important event for us and we are looking to get help with promoting and advertising it, so if you would like to...

A word from the President – June 2012

Greetings Everyone! It has rained a lot in the past few weeks. If you moved your orchids outside, the rainwater is the best way to flush the accumulated fertilizer and salts in the pot and medium. Now let’s hope for some drier weather so the roots can dry up and not rot! The speaker this month, Geraldine Powell, will talk about the ABCs of Cool Weather Orchids. Some of the most exotic flowers can be found in the cool growers group so this should be a very interesting program. We have our annual Growers Day coming up on August 4, Saturday, and we need volunteers to help with the logistics,...
