Building a Quality Cattleya Collection

Our very own, Dr. Harry Gallis, will speak to us on Cattleyas. Harry is a native of Athens, GA, and a graduate of Duke University School of Medicine where he practiced and taught internal medicine and infectious diseases.
Harry began growing orchids in 1980, initially purely as a hobbyist, ultimately growing his collection to a small commercial backyard operation with 3500 plants.
He has been a member of the American Orchid Society (AOS) since 1980, entered the AOS judging program in 1991, and
has served in numerous AOS positions since then. He is currently an Emeritus Judge, AOS Honorary Vice President, and member of the AOS Governance Committee. On the local level, Harry has been active in the Triangle Orchid Society since 1980, serving as president, program chair, and in lots of other positions.
Harry’s orchids have received 56 AOS awards including three of his own hybrids: Den Alex Gallis, Den Sara Gallis, and Rct Savannah Hope Gallis. His collection consists primarily of
Cattleyas and Dendrobiums. He currently keeps most of his orchids at his daughter Sara’s Riverwood Orchids Farm boarding/sales nursery near his home in Durham.

Sara Gallis, Riverwood Orchids Farm, plans to sell a selection of cattleya hybrid seedlings.
